It's December, but that doesn't mean that you should stop. Hello and welcome to the Property Unleashed With me your host, mark Fitzgerald. It's great to be joining you here today. So we are at the final month of the year. Where has 2024 gone? I have to say I had to pinch myself the other day when somebody said to me it's Christmas soon. It's like no, no, no. Of course. It is Unbelievable.
Speaker 1:The year seems to have gone in a flash, in a blink of an eye, and, of course, lots and lots of things have happened this year. There's been ups, there's been downs, there's been breakthroughs. There's been ups, there's been downs, there's been breakthroughs. There's been some phenomenal deals as well, and I hope that you are getting out there and you're doing great deals for yourself as well. Now, as always, there will be people that are brand new to property investing or have started for a little bit here but still maybe are looking for those right deals for themselves. There'll be other people who've got a big portfolio and are flying along potentially, or maybe even just hit a stumbling block and are finding it difficult At times. We all find it difficult. Don't think that you're any way different than anybody else. It's like a roller coaster, this whole property investing journey. I wish it was a trajectory that just went straight up and we went off to the moon and got everything that we wanted. But we will have ups, we will have downs, and that's why we always obviously say that it's so important to make sure that you're involved in a community of like-minded people to help you get through the hard times.
Speaker 1:But, going back to this year and how quickly it's all gone, I'm hoping that a lot of people that are listening to this have hit their goals. You know we like to set lofty goals each and every year, don't we? Or we should be doing so? And have you managed to achieve and hit those goals? I've got a good handful of goals that I set myself this year. I've achieved some of them. Some of them I achieved very, very quickly as well, and a couple I haven't yet achieved. So I will be rolling those over, and I will be rolling those over, and I will also, though, just take a bit of time to review those goals that I didn't achieve. Why didn't I achieve them? You know, there's some great questions that you want to be asking yourself and thinking about is why didn't you achieve the goals that you set yourself. If that is the case, and if you don't take the time to review it and you just say, well, I'll just change those goals, I'll put those to next year, chances are, when next year comes, you're not going to hit them again. So really do use December. I love using December to just sit down and work out where I want to be next year, in 2025, where do you want to be?
Speaker 1:And, fundamentally, there's three areas of your life that you want to be focusing on. Firstly, it's your mindset. You've got to get your mindset right. You're never going to achieve anything if you're procrastinating, if you're holding yourself back, if you haven't got the right mindset. The next thing you want to be looking at is your skill set. Do you have the skills to accomplish the goals and the targets that you're setting yourself, or do you need to gain more knowledge, more skills along the way? And if you do, what skills do you need? Ok, what, what do you exactly need to be reading, to be learning, to be educating yourself in? What are the people? Who are the people that you want to be hanging around?
Speaker 1:And, lastly, I always like to take a bit of time to look at my habits. What is serving me in life and what is not serving me in life? What is serving me in life and what is not serving me in life? What is potentially a bad habit that I have that I have to maybe get rid of? And habits are easily formed and very, very difficult at times to get rid of For me in 2024. I really wanted to be getting into the gym regularly, looking after myself, eating as healthy as possible, and I had some good spells in 2024 where I was doing just that, but I just could not keep the habit I have not implemented it into my life to be a habit that is a non-negotiable and happens each and every week. So 2025, I need to review exactly why it didn't happen. What was holding me back, what stopped me, what did I procrastinate on and how can I make it easier to achieve in 2025? So look at that with all of the goals that you're putting out there. But your habits are, realistically, what's going to help you reach those lofty goals, those targets that you've got there. So have a habit of calling agents. Have a habit of looking at property portals on a regular basis, reaching out to people. If you feel uncomfortable talking to people start to have a habit that each week, you'll reach out to three or four new people that you have never met before or you've never spoken to before to start to make it easier for you, make habits work for you and you, of course, then will be able to reach the targets that you're looking for. But the mindset, as I say, the mindset, the skill set and the habits are what will help anybody achieve their own goals as we go into 2025.
Speaker 1:Now, it is early December at the moment here, so it's a chance for you to start reflecting on the year, and a great way to do that is to have little 25 minutes, maybe 60 minutes of journaling time. Now, some people can journal. Some people love journaling. I love journaling. Do I do it every day? Not every day, but I try and do it most days. I don't give myself a hard time. I used to give myself a hard time when I missed it, but right here, right now, I always use December to journal and review my year, and one of the best ways to do that is to grab your phone.
Speaker 1:Grab your phone, go into your camera settings where all your photographs are sorry, your photo settings, or app and go back to the beginning of 2024, maybe even check out December of 2023. Okay, what were the goals that you were setting yourself? Who was that person? You know if you've got any selfies or any pictures of yourself or anything. I have quite a lot of selfies, I have to say, but I always like to take a picture of something because it's a memory and it jogs your memory. We can easily forget things. It's nice to go back and review those photographs to see exactly what you did, and I bet you any money if you actually take the time to do this exercise.
Speaker 1:Start to scroll through those photographs of 2024. You will see things that you've done or that you've achieved that you completely forgot about. You will have gone places that you potentially yeah, I remember now. I went to that networking event. It was really good. I met some really good people there. Have I reached back out to those people? So, start making some mental notes and some physical notes of people that maybe you can reach back out to.
Speaker 1:But, equally, reviewing the year, were you messing about or were you serious in your property, investing in moving yourself towards your targets and your goals, or were you just playing at it? You have to have these hard conversations with yourself to really see if you are pushing yourself to achieve the results that you want to achieve. Myself personally, I love this exercise because it gives me an opportunity to not only go back, see what I've achieved, see what maybe I haven't achieved yet, but I can look at the fun times, the things I've done with my family, with my kids, with my wife, with my friends, and it's really a nice time to just reflect on the life that you have. Are you living the life that you want to live? Because if you're not, only you can do something about it. If you're going to make anything happen, it all comes down to you. It's rested on your shoulders. Now you might have a significant other in your life, but I'd still recommend you be the person. You be the person that pushes your life forward. Do not rely on anybody else to help you or support you on this. You have to have that mental resilience to be able to do these things. Now, if you have a partner, a life partner, a best friend, a significant other who is on this journey with you, amazing, amazing. But do make sure you make time for fun and that you enjoy the journey as well.
Speaker 1:But do this exercise, review your year, see what the ups were, see what the downs were and see how you can make next year even better. Are there certain things that you did, certain things that you learned that you can now incorporate into the next year? I always say I want to be a new version of myself each and every year. I don't want to be the same, mark. You know, when you go and see a friend and maybe you haven't seen them for a long time and they're having a good conversation with you and they say, mark, you've changed, you're a bit different now, I think that's brilliant. We should be changing. I don't want to stay the same. We should all be looking at improving ourselves and being different and a lot of the time if people don't like the new you, that's on them, it's not on you. It's because they haven't changed, because they're set in their ways. They're stuck, maybe living in the past, and that's no good and not healthy for anybody.
Speaker 1:So make sure that you are always working on a new and improved version of yourself and you have to document that journey. You have to make sure you've got the healthy habits, the skill set and the mindset to be able to do these things and, equally, on top of all of that, you do need to make sure that you know as clear as day the person that you want to be, the lifestyle that you want to live and the resources that you want to have in your life, your business, your financial resources, your investments and things, even if you like your job. Most people, on average, live to the age of 75. That's quite a depressing stat, actually, but one way of looking at it is a lot of people will live one year 75 times. What my plan to try and do is to live 75 different years to improve myself each and every year. You see the same thing with businesses as well.
Speaker 1:Somebody says to me I've been in business for 10 years, have you? What's the growth? Well, we're still just, you know, just getting by. We're still, you know, trying to do this, trying to do that, but we're not really getting anywhere. So, realistically, yes, you've been in business for 10 years, but you've really been in business for one year 10 times.
Speaker 1:Look to improve. Look to improve your property investing. Look to improve yourself, look to improve the people around you. Now you can take a horse to water. You can't make him drink it, as the old saying goes. But I tell you what for a fact right here, right now is.
Speaker 1:My wife now is more involved in self-development, in improving her mindset, in getting out there, than she's ever been. I've never once forced a book on her. I've never once tried to do or tried to teach her in any way, shape or form. I would never try that at the end of the day. But, like my kids as well, they've seen what I've been doing and they're taking the parts that they resonate with. And they're taking the parts that they resonate with. They're taking the bits that they like and they're opening their own minds. And I can see vast improvements in the people that are around me as well.
Speaker 1:And if you do this action and you make sure that you are the leading person in all of this, your loved ones, a lot of the time, will follow suit. Some won't, some might fall by the wayside and have that, but normally the right people and the closest people to you are the ones that will start to see the improvements in you and think to themselves I want to be that person. You can inspire other people, even if you're just getting started. So work on your mindset, make sure that you're positive, you're surrounding yourself with positive people, you're making sure that you are the energy when you do anything. You've got the skill set. You know exactly what it is you want to be doing. You've got the roadmap to follow. Just follow a roadmap. Follow the steps of other people. Don't do all of this on your own. You don't have to. Don't make all of those mistakes. Get out there and have the mindset and the skillset to do things and then start building the daily disciplines, the daily habits. Okay, work on those habits.
Speaker 1:Make sure you're drinking enough water, you're getting enough sleep. A lot of the time, people say, well, I get up really, really early. You know I have about three hours sleep. I don't need sleep, you do. You do need sleep to be sharp, to be on it. Get yourself in the best physical condition you can do, because it'll help you in whatever it is you're trying to achieve. If you're fitter and stronger and you can go longer and you're well-rested, you are in a great place and your state of mind will be so much more positive than if you're tired, if you're down around yourself and the other people around you, if everything annoys you. So make sure you're looking after number one. After all, what are we all doing this for? We've all only got so much time on this planet. We need to make sure that we maximize that time to full effect.
